An enduring symbol for New Orleans is its water meter covers that dot the streets throughout the city. The history of this piece is unique to New Orleans, not to be found anywhere else. The cover was designed by the founder of the Ford Water Meter Company following a trip to New Orleans back in 1920. New Orleans was the Ford Water Meter company’s biggest client at the time, and the Ford Company was the inventor of the meter.
Since 1920, these covers have become something of an icon. Highly sought after, the original covers are often pilfered only to be replaced by a generic meter cover as the originals are no longer produced.
